Two easy balance assessments you can begin using on your clients over 65.

    1. The 8-Foot Up and Go
    2. The 5x Chair Stand Test

The 8-foot up and go is a very simple test to administer. You need a chair and a tall cone. Place the cone 8 feet from the front of the chair. The cone sits behind the 8-foot mark, not in front of it. It is not 8 feet plus the cone. They can get up however they like, and can use a cane or walker. You cue them "ready set go, or 1, 2, 3 go"....and you can let them try it 1-3 times. You want their fastest time. Anything 8.5 seconds or slower has been shown to be highly predictive of fallers. Here are some normative times from the Senior Fitness Test Manual.

The 5x chair stand test is very simple. Can they fully stand 5x in 14 seconds or less? Time their score, and anything over 14 seconds is concerning that they may be at risk for falling. They cannot use their hands to get up, but need to cross their arms, ideally so their hands touch their shoulders. This test clearly shows whether or not they have the power needed to get up quickly and repeatedly up to 5 times. It is less about muscular endurance compared to the 30 second chair stand.
