According to a 2006 survey, over seven million US high school students are active in interscholastic sports, and 1.4 million of those encounter injuries.
While injuries rates halved from the last decade, the ratio of serious injuries has increased. Some have speculated that this is due to students isolating muscle use to a single sport for the year, while others attribute it to the improvement of medical techniques, which decreases the number of minor injuries, thus increasing the ratio of serious injuries.
