As a fitness professional, you are asked to wear a lot of hats — from personal trainer, instructor, coach, teammate and leader, to social media manager, human resource advisor, technology guru and innovator. You can enjoy a smoother ride by giving yourself the best chance of success, seeing your business as a client, and making decisions more often.

Business Tip #1
Give yourself the best chance of success
When you launch a new idea, product or service in your fitness business, give it the best possible chance of success by looking at it from all angles, identifying the problem that it solves, keeping your foot on the gas after you launch it, and helping it take off before you get distracted or deterred. Often in business, we run an idea to the starting line. After we announce it, it loses its luster.
The bulk of the work is usually on the front end. Once that is done, stay the course and run the program, get better at it, share results, keep the spotlight on it. The fortune of the new idea is in the follow-through, not just the launch. Whether it’s a new kids’ fitness program, corporate wellness offering, or supplement line, keep your eye on the prize and give it the best chance to succeed.
Business Tip #2
Be a client of your services. To see your business with fresh eyes, use it as a client or member would on a regular basis. When you take off your hat as a leader, manager, or trainer, and workout in your space, take a class, or participate in a session, you see opportunities to tweak, shift or change a process.
It’s easy to get away from being a member of your own services. When you show up on a regular basis, you can easily fine-tune, and catch inefficiencies before they get bigger. As I started to use my own club more, I noticed everything from cleaning systems, to flow of traffic in the door, to our equipment storage, and how we greeted members at our front desk, and in classes. I also started taking our virtual fitness classes and saw the high-quality delivery first-hand. It gave me the idea to build out that area of our membership more. Not all adjustments fix problems, some create new opportunities.
Personal Growth Tip #3
To save your energy, make decisions. Just as swiping up and clearing the apps on our smart phone saves battery, making decisions that are sitting open on your mind saves energy. Every day as professionals, you face decisions. Most people delay, overthink, ignore, or let decisions pile up until they become urgent. When you look at an issue, take appropriate steps to understand the options and outcomes, and make regular decisions, leadership gets easier.
In any given week, you may need to adjust your business hours, client rates, or responsibilities of a teammate. You may need to hire accounting services, refresh your brand, invest in new technology, add equipment, or simply decide on a policy change. Make the decision, communicate it clearly, and move forward. You’ll have more mental energy for the rest of your day.
