The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) announced today the release of the IHRSA Health Club Consumer Report, which provides detailed insight into the metrics, participation trends, and demographics of both member and non-member consumers in American fitness facilities.
“With more than 4.6 billion annual visits by consumers, the health club industry’s importance to the economy and millions of people it serves is self evident,” said Jay Ablondi, IHRSA’s executive VP of global products. “Every day, in communities large and small, health clubs are helping people live healthier.”
The IHRSA Health Club Consumer Report includes member and consumer information including demographics, income, membership history, attendance, equipment usage, activity participation rates, in addition to health club consumer cluster profiles and PRIZM profiles, which are provided to assist club operators in designing profitable marketing initiatives to engage current consumers. The report also includes the health club participation index, which provides key information on consumers’ usage trends.
“The content in this report gives health club operators and industry manufacturers a detailed look into the profile of a typical club member and prospective customer – knowledge that will guide our industry to improve customer service, member relations, and retention. IHRSA is confident that this report will help our industry better understand its customers,” Ablondi said.
Health club members attended their clubs an average of 101 days, with affluent and over 55 age groups having shown above average attendance in 2008. Weight training and treadmills were popular club activities of choice among consumers, who were also active outside the club.
“Health club members participated in a variety of in-club and non-club activities, knowledge of which will prove valuable to club operators interested in cross-marketing opportunities with other fitness and sports organizations,” said Melissa Rodriguez, IHRSA’s manager of research.
The IHRSA Health Club Consumer Report was produced in conjunction with Sports Marketing Surveys. The report is available on www.ihrsastore.com in PDF only.
